Will boys or girls run more?

Hey everyone. Time to get up from that computer desk and get your body moving!

Next week, my daughter and I are running a 5K race called Meet Me Downtown, with about 2,000 other athletes (or pseudo-athletes, in my case). There’s a free concert, jumping castle, and a beer garden at the end, just to entice a few more young and young at heart to get up and move.

Exercise is not just good for your body, it can get your mind thinking, too.

Exercise your Brain

This reminds me of an interesting experiment one of my students did.

An Honorable Mention Science Fair Experiment

Question: How far do boys run vs how far do girls run, on their own time?

Procedure: At school there is a program called Milers Club, where kids can keep track of how many miles they run around the track during lunchtime or other breaks. All of the kids in the elementary school can participate.

The student, with the help of the P.E. teacher, secretly kept track of how far boys and girls ran each week.

Results: Over 4 weeks she tallied up how much each gender ran. Girls ran more.

Judge’s comments: This was a great idea for a free project. It was especially good because there were so many students involved in the study. If the science fair board would have had graphs of the results, this could have been a winning project.

Another Interesting Study

Looking at the Southern Arizona Roadrunners site, I see they did a little study of their own. The pie chart shows that, so far, 61% of the entrants are women. The graph shows that the ages span from under 20 to over 75!

Running Science

Your Challenge

So, you moms and dads out there. I challenge you to get out and move. Run, walk, or skip with your kids.

Make it into an experiment. Who can run farther or faster? Whose pulse goes up the most? Let me know how you did in the comments.

I have no doubt, I’ll be slower and more out of breath than my daughter!
