Cookies make scientists happy

I go crazy over a gooey, fresh out-of-the-oven chocolate chip cookie. I mean, who wouldn’t, right? Unfortunately, whenever I run across a cookie experiment, which is often, EVERY SINGLE ONE of the bakers cooks chocolate chip cookies. Can’t someone sneak a peanut butter or a triple chocolate walnut cookie  into the mix?

What I really mean is, to have a good science experiment you must be unique, different, not the same as every other cookie out there.

Awesome Cookie Science Experiments

So, here are 5 original experiments that do not involve chocolate chips.

  1. In this ScienceFriday article, scientists give you ideas for greasy ingredients other than butter to try in your next cookie. Duck fat anyone? duck fat cookie science experimentYou might not mention that during your taste testing. What other fat can you think of trying? What happens to the cookie when you try it? Does it get softer, fatter, crunchier, wider?
  2. Can you put the chewy in gluten-free cookies? This ScienceNewsForStudents post has a friend baking 400 cookies to taste test for her gluten-free friend! She changed the amount of xanthan gum (a powder to make dough more elastic) in each batch, then had testers rank the cookies by taste.gluten free cookie science experimentNice. What special cookies can you make for your egg-free friend?
  3. Can you resist a cookie? In this LiveScience article, scientists test how much self-control with cookies and marshmallows can be seen in children, and what this means for their future. The kids could eat one cookie now, or wait 15 minutes and get two cookies. After the kids grew up, those who had the willpower to wait for two cookies often had higher test scores and lower body mass index.  kid cookie science experimentsI wonder if girls or boys have more self control when left alone with cookies? How about moms or dads?
  4. Why does smelling cookies makes you think of grandma’s house? Because smells, unlike the other senses, travel to parts of the brain associated with emotions and memory. At least that’s what Hank says in this episode of SciShow. smelling cookie science experimentsDoes smelling a chocolate chip cookie make you think of different memories than smelling a peanut butter cookie? It does for me, ’cause my dad’s favorite cookies are peanut butter, so they remind me of him. Chocolate chip cookie smells just make my mouth water.
  5. Bacon onion cookies. These low carb, gluten-free cookies aren’t really part of an experiment. They just sounded really unique and interesting! And that’s the most important part of an awesome science project. There’s gotta be something fun to experiment on in these babies.

Types of Cookies

Here are some other types of cookies for your cookie science experiments.

  • high protein cookies
  • sugar-free cookies
  • low carb cookies
  • dairy-free cookies
  • paleo cookies
  • vegan cookies

Directions for an Original Experiment

  1. Find a problem. For example: My dad wants to eat delicious cookies, but he’s on a high protein diet.
  2. Pick one type of cookie to test. For example: high protein cookies
  3. Pick one ingredient in that cookie that you will change. For example: the amount of protein powder. Use different amounts of that ingredient, so you can compare 3 or 4 batches of cookies. (1/2 tsp, 1 tsp, 1 1/2 tsp protein powder)
  4. Pick one thing you will measure. For example: taste
  5. Make a hypothesis on what you think will happen as you change your ingredient.
  6. Bake all batches of cookies and make measurements: using a 1-10 taste scale.
  7. Eat more cookies and decide if your hypothesis was proven true or false.
  8. Feed the best cookies to your dad.
